Love it or Hate it
I cannot see what all the fuss is about, apart from the Statue of Liberty, and Ellis Island (both good) the only real differences between it and London are it: has less history and variety; is shabbier (even Macy's), is easier to find your way round because of the (boring) grid system; and you have to bend your neck more as you look up to see the tops of buildings. I prefer the Clifton Suspension Bridge to the ugly Brooklyn Bridge - its pretier, quieter, doesn't take as long to walk across, and you don't have to keep a constant look out for cyclists.
In NY the legendary American service (at least in the down market joints I visit) has not been any more evident than service in the UK i.e. pot luck from poor to very good. A lot of travellers prefer Chicago.
